Course overview

Take the next step to successful management of a residential building business with this technical qualification. Complete this course so you can apply for a Builder - Low Rise licence.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as construction managers grew very strongly over the past five years and is likely to see strong growth in the future. It is anticipated there will be around 54,000 job openings in this area over the next five years, ensuring your skills will be in high demand.

In this course you'll learn how to plan building construction work, apply structural principles and supervise on-site construction. You'll learn how to apply building codes, and meet standards and legal requirements to maintain industry quality. You'll also gain business skills such as how to manage contracts and small business finances.

Successful completion of this qualification will allow you to apply for a Builder - Low Rise licence and set you up to successfully manage a residential building business.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

It is recommended you meet one of the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of a Certificate II/III, or Year 11 (or equivalent);
  • Mature-aged entry with work experience in a related field

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • long leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection
  • disposable dust masks
  • You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing.

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs, or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

You are also required to have access to and bring personal stationary, a USB, a calculator, and tools/equipment including a folding metre ruler (carpenter) and a 5m tape measure.

Assessment methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
