Course overview

Gain skills in the latest design and manufacturing technology with this apprenticeship qualification. Become a trade-qualified patternmaker and progress your career in engineering design and fabrication.

You will gain transferable skills in design and manufacturing that are highly sought after in a broad range of industries including engineering, mining, construction and associated industries.

This course will provide you with the skills to produce wooden, plastic, metal and polystyrene patterns, that are used in the production of moulds for cast metal products in the mining, rail and automotive industries. You will learn how to determine metal shrinkage and work with timber and resins, perform computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing and computer numerical control (CNC) manual techniques. As well as produce visual models, experimental models and models for the manufacture of prototype developmental products. Our highly-experienced, industry-respected teachers will ensure you are up-to-date with the latest technology including utilisation of 3D printing equipment.

Successful completion of this course will allow you to become a trade qualified patternmaker and continue your career in design and fabrication.

Full-functional foundry

TAFE Queensland has invested $7.5 million to establish the only working training foundry in the Southern Hemisphere at our Acacia Ridge location. The facility has brought patternmaking to the 21st century with two purpose-built metallurgical laboratories, computer numerical control (CNC) machining, computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing.

Selection criteria

To study an apprenticeship program you must be indentured as an apprentice with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide the necessary human and physical resources to qualify for an apprentice.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum occupational health and safety requirements in practical classes.
This includes the use of:

  • safety glasses
  • protective footwear with safety toe cap and non-slip soles to AS2210
  • leather gloves to AS2161
  • hair protection
  • You should also wear 100% cotton drill industry-standard clothing

If you fail to meet these minimum standards of dress, you will not be permitted entry into practical classes.

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.
