Course overview

If you want to learn how to use Microsoft Excel 2016 for your job or daily personal use, at TAFE Queensland we have the course for you!  Microsoft Office Excel: Beginners is designed to assist you in getting familiar with Microsoft Excel.

This course is for those who have never had formal training on how to use Microsoft Office products and need to understand the core functions of Excel.

For the face-to-face, classroom sessions, we will take you step-by-step through the essentials of the program. The instructor will demonstrate the exercises and then you will practise these new skills. The instructor will be available the whole time for support and assistance. Furthermore, you will be provided with a comprehensive manual to take home for future reference.

At the end of this course you will have mastered the essentials of:

  • Microsoft Excel 2016
  • navigating around your computer
  • loading and saving your work
  • copying your files to a USB.

Gold Coast
Microsoft Excel -  6 hours face to face on campus. 

In this session, using the Windows 10 platform, you will learn how to:

  • navigate your way around Microsoft Excel 2016
  • create a new workbook
  • open and navigate within workbooks and worksheets
  • understand cells and ranges in a worksheet
  • use filling techniques
  • create a simple formula
  • print your workbook data.

Greater Brisbane
Microsoft Excel - 4 hours. In this session you will:

  • Learn how to use Excel for modelling and analysis including efficient data entry using Flash Fill, spreadsheet management and design, basic functions (SUM) and simple formulas, basic charting, using Wrap Text, Format Painter, Absolute Reference and Conditional Formatting.
  • Learn how to use Excel as a data base including using Text to Column, locating and deleting duplicate records, extracting data from cells, adding filters, sorting data and extracting specific records from the data base.

This short course is non-accredited therefore is not registered with the National Training Register.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

It is highly recommended that you have sound computer literacy skills at the time of enrolment into this course, including a general understanding of personal computers and the Windows operating system, especially working with files and folders.

You must be able to confidently use a mouse and keyboard.

  • If you are driving, BEFORE you arrive, please download the EasyPark App, set up your account and in the Search bar at top of the screen, type ‘Tafe’ and select the appropriate parking area to set as your location – something similar to this will appear- Care Park Australia street parking, private, 1 day duration.
  • We highly recommend you download the app and enter the details prior to arriving as there may be no signal in the basement. If you have any issues reach out to security on campus located on the ground floor near the lifts.
  • Parking can be accessed via Paddington Place. ONLY park in the spaces marked with the Red TAFE Queensland logo on the ground on either B1 or B2 to avoid being fined by Easy Park. 
    Please be aware that parking spaces can fill early.

Please note: The Seedpod Cafe on site at our Robina Campus is not open for business on the weekend or in the evenings so you are advised to bring your own refreshments.
The Green Fields restaurant & bar on site at our Robina Campus is open from 4pm-9pm most days of the week. Green Fields information.
