This course will give you the skills and knowledge you need to work with young people and families in a number of different community settings.

This certification covers a number of core skills such as using communication to develop relationships, facilitating family intervention strategies, identifying and responding to at-risk youth, and working with people with mental illness. Our experienced and highly-regarded teaching team will give you the one-on-one guidance and industry experience you need to succeed in the field.

Successful completion of the course will qualify you to work as a relationship educator, family support worker or youth residential care worker.

Selection criteria

External Students need to have a workplace (either as a paid or voluntary worker) that provides an opportunity to demonstrate their practical skills in the units being studied.  Students who are not working (whether paid or voluntary) in a relevant workplace (for example: Youth Services, Family Support Services or Community Services organisation - who support families who are at risk of entering Child Protection) are required to source and complete 200 hours of Vocational Placement in a relevant organisation in order to attain this qualification.

Please see “Placement” section below for further information.  A Placement arrangement is not required prior to enrolling, however it is strongly recommended that prospective students make sufficient enquiries to be confident of their ability to successfully locate a placement during Stage 1 of their studies. Stage 1 cannot be graded until placement arrangements have been approved and third party assessments completed.  *Please note: additional restrictions or eligibility criteria may apply.

Face to Face Students  You will be required to undertake 120 hours of Vocational Placement if you are not currently working in an appropriate role within the Child Protection sector. If you are unsure if your current role is appropriate, please speak with our teaching team.  You will be required to hold or obtain a Working with Children Check (Blue Card) whilst volunteering or working in the community sector. If you do not already hold a Blue Card, you will be required to submit an application at the time of enrolment to avoid delays in attending placement. 

Literacy levels equivalent to a successful completion of year 10 English are recommended. Study will involve a range of reading comprehension activities, analysis of information and interpretation, working with policies and legislation, completing forms, hand-written and electronic reports, writing case notes and referrals, and conducting research and referencing.  Self-motivation and the confidence to reach out for support if needed are crucial for external study - staff at TAFE Queensland are here to support you throughout your training

Need to know

To be eligible for the Higher Level Skills subsidised price, individuals must;   

  • be aged 15 years or over, and no longer at school 
  • permanently reside in Queensland  be an Australian citizen, permanent resident (includes humanitarian entrant), temporary resident with the necessary visa and work permits on the pathway to permanent residency, or a New Zealand citizen 
  • not hold, and not enrolled into, a Certificate IV or higher-level qualification, not including qualifications completed at school and foundation skills training.  

Blue Card: Commission for Children and Young People Act 2000 (Qld) contains a new law to help ensure that people seeking to work with children are suitable. This is called 'the working with children check'. Any person wanting to work in regulated employment, as a paid employee, a volunteer, or a person carrying on a regulated business, will have to fill out a Blue Card application form consenting to a criminal history check prior to his or her appointment or engagement (See ‘Relevant Documents below). Further details can be obtained at the following link for Blue Card Services or by telephone on 1800 688 275 (Free call). Students will be unable to attend Vocational Placement until they hold a valid Blue Card. 

To complete the blue card or exemption card application process you will need to: 

1. Prepare your application form online from here

2. Download and print a copy of your application once completed.  

3. Have your identification documents checked and verified by an authorised representative from our organisation. 

4. Make sure our organisation’s representative has signed the application form, and listed the identification documents sighted 

5. Submit your completed application to a TAFE Queensland representative.  Once enrolled the application will be lodged with Blue Card Services for processing and final approval. 

It is to your advantage to have a Blue Card before commencing study.  Depending on placement provider a student may be required to apply for a National Police Check or Child Safety history check prior to commencement of that placement. A Blue Card is not accepted in place of a National Police Check.

Assessment Methods

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
