Georgia goes from the classroom to the club

For Georgia Dowling, rugby league has always been more than just a game - it’s part of her family’s DNA.

Growing up in a household where weekends revolved around footy, she developed a deep passion for the sport.

Wanting a career in sports, Georgia began studying sports management online at another institution but found the experience disengaging.

Juggling two jobs as a café coordinator and a chiropractic assistant, she struggled to find the right fit for her career ambitions.

“I saw an online ad for the Brisbane Broncos Sports Business Institute when they started taking applications, but I couldn’t commit to two days a week,” Georgia said.

“When it popped up on Instagram again, I thought, ‘Stuff it, I’ll just apply.’ It turned out to be the best decision I’ve made.”

Enrolling to study the Diploma of Sport and Diploma of Leadership and Management (SIS50321/BSB50420) at the club's Red Hill headquarters, Georgia, had access to elite high-performance facilities and key industry experts in sports and entertainment.

As part of TAFE Queensland's Academy of Sport, Georgia and her class were guided by experts from the industry. She learnt sport, leadership, and management with the support of the Brisbane Broncos, elite high-performance staff and players providing invaluable professional insights and experience.

Studying at the Broncos’ headquarters gave Georgia a unique, immersive learning experience as she turned her passion into a promising sporting career.

Not only was she surrounded by industry professionals, but she also had the chance to observe the club’s inner workings firsthand.

“You’d walk past players training, see the CEO in the hallway - it made you feel like part of the club. The facilitators were incredible. They were approachable, supportive, and made learning enjoyable,” she said.

Beyond the classroom, Georgia took full advantage of the course’s work-integrated learning opportunities, accelerating her development by completing 100 hours of work-integrated learning across the club's various teams and game day activations.

Encouraged by her lecturers to gain hands-on experience, she reached out to the Souths Logan Magpies rugby league club, offering to volunteer one day a week in their office and assist on game days. That initiative paid off.

After nearly a year of volunteering, Georgia’s dedication and enthusiasm led to an unexpected but welcome career breakthrough.

“At the end of the year, the club secured funding for a full-time wellbeing position. Their head of wellbeing couldn’t take on a full-time role, and a position became available, and I applied,” she said.

“I got the interview - and then the job. It’s my dream role, and I thought it would take another two or three years to get here.”

She now runs junior teams, manages player education, and develops wellbeing plans, crediting her studies for giving her the skills and confidence to succeed.

“Before, I had a kind of ‘fake confidence’ - I knew I could do things, but I wouldn’t push myself. Now, I have the skills and the self-belief to step up and take charge.”

Reflecting on her journey, Georgia has no hesitation in recommending the course to others.

“I’ve already encouraged players and young people I meet to consider it. Leadership is so important in sports, and this course sets you up for success,” concluded Georgia.

With her career accelerating faster than expected, Georgia proves that you can turn your passion into a profession with the right training, real-world experience, and determination.
