New teachers bring fresh energy to Charters Towers
TAFE Queensland’s Charters Towers campus has welcomed three passionate new teachers, each bringing their own experience and enthusiasm to help shape the region’s future workforce.
TAFE Queensland Charters Towers campus is experiencing a 28% growth in enrolments over the past three years, and these new educators reflect the growing demand for high-quality vocational training in the community.
Malcolm McLennan, a long-time engineering and automotive teacher, is stepping into a new role, retraining to deliver foundation skills programs.
“I’ve been teaching for years, but this is a challenge I’m really excited about,” Malcolm said. “Helping people strengthen their literacy, numeracy, and workplace skills can make a huge difference in their lives, giving them a pathway into further training and employment.”
He is now delivering the Certificate II in Skills for Work and Vocational Pathways (FSK20119) three days a week, supporting local students as they build the confidence to take the next step toward their careers.
Also joining the Charters Towers team is Josiah Phillott, a long-time local who has started his vocational teaching career as an automotive teacher with the TAFE at School program.
“It’s great to be part of TAFE Queensland,” Josiah said. “I’m looking forward to creating a dynamic learning space where students can develop real-world skills and transition into apprenticeships.”
The Certificate II in Automotive Vocational Preparation (AUR20720) is one of several programs available to high school students at the campus. It offers hands-on training alongside their school studies, allowing them to graduate job ready with a nationally recognised qualification.
For Josiah, the chance to mentor young people is especially meaningful. “I’ve worked in the industry, and I know how important it is to build skills early,” he said.
“It’s not just about teaching them how to use tools; it’s about preparing them for a career in a high-demand trade.”
Another key addition to the team is Jared Moon, an experienced teacher in engineering. After living in Mount Isa and Townsville, Jared is making the move to Charters Towers with his family to take on his new role.
“My wife and kids are excited about the move, and we’re looking forward to becoming part of this great community,” Jared said.
“It’s rewarding to help students gain practical skills and connect them with industry opportunities.”
Jared will be delivering the Certificate II in Engineering Pathways (MEM20422), providing students with the skills needed for apprenticeships in metal fabrication, mechanical engineering, and more.
TAFE Queensland’s Director of Educational Delivery, Services and Arts, Jane McKellar, welcomed the new teachers and highlighted the impact of their commitment to the region.
“We’re incredibly fortunate to have Malcolm, Josiah, and Jared on board,” she said. “Having teachers who are passionate about their fields and committed to living and working in Charters Towers strengthens our ability to support students and local businesses.”
She also emphasised the critical role TAFE Queensland plays in regional workforce development.
“Our goal isn’t just to provide training - we’re here to help local businesses find skilled workers and to enhance the social and economic fabric of the communities we serve,” Jane said.
TAFE Queensland’s Charters Towers campus provides training across health services, engineering, automotive, and resource industries, helping to equip students with the skills they need to thrive in the region’s mining, agriculture, and infrastructure sectors.
TAFE Queensland also delivers short courses and industry-specific training, including civil construction, White Card, First Aid and CPR courses, ensuring that local Charters Towers workers can upskill to meet industry needs.
With the addition of these new teachers, the campus is looking ahead to another big year of growth and success.
