Students Take the Lead: Inside Student Voice at TAFE Queensland

At TAFE Queensland, we believe students should be at the centre of decision-making, and now, they are.

Launched in 2024, our Student Voice program empowers students to actively shape their learning journey and campus experience.

From contributing ideas, giving feedback, representing peers, and leading projects, Student Voice allows students to drive real change and develop valuable life and career skills.

It’s all about partnership, inclusion, and community, and our students are stepping up with passion and purpose.

This year, we're excited to announce not only our Student Ambassadors but also a host of new roles that will amplify student engagement and leadership:

·        Leaders: Guiding initiatives such as the Student Council

·        Representatives: Voicing the diverse perspectives of our student body

·        Collaborators & Engagers: Sparking enthusiasm and participation across the board

For Student Voice Leader, Joel Healy, a Diploma of Justice (10972NAT) student at TAFE Queensland’s South Bank campus, the opportunity to be part of the Student Council was deeply personal.

“I always strive to advocate for those who don’t have a voice. I want to make a meaningful difference in a constantly growing and developing learning environment,” said Joel.

Already a Dual Diploma of Business and Diploma of Leadership and Management (BSB50120/BSB50420) graduate, Joel says returning to study was about continuing to challenge himself and giving back.

“Studying Justice helped me better understand the legal system. I aim to start a private investigator business and help people understand their rights. Through Student Voice, I can also support other students on their journey,” he said.

Student Ambassador (Academic) and Diploma of Leadership & Management (BSB50420) student Ridwan Haider agrees.

“Being part of Student Voice is an opportunity to make a real impact. I’m excited to contribute to the Brisbane Academic Committee and help shape a better academic experience for everyone,” Ridwan said.

Representing the student community

Student Voice members bring diverse experiences and stories to their roles, and they’re united by a shared desire to help others, like Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation (ATP) (11240NAT) and Wellbeing Ambassador, Brisbane Region, Levi Wilson.

The ATP course gave Levi a second chance to pursue university after not completing Years 11 and 12, proving she’s capable and ready for a Bachelor of Education.

“As a Student Ambassador (Wellbeing), I want to inspire others to believe in themselves. True wellbeing goes beyond mental health - it includes every part of life, and positive change can benefit our whole TAFE community,” said Levi.

Student Voice Member and Diploma of Nursing (HLT54121) student, Brenda Nyamhotsi, arrived from Zimbabwe in August 2023 and joined TAFE Queensland to complete her IELTS preparation. She is now studying a Diploma of Nursing at the South Bank campus.

“TAFE Queensland helped me take the first step toward my future. I’m friendly and sociable, and I joined Student Voice to impact others’ lives positively,” said Brenda.

Thi Ngoc Anh Tran (Anh), a Certificate III in Early Childhood Education and Care (CHC30121) student and Student Voice Member, joined Student Voice to broaden her social and professional horizons.

She stated, "I joined so I can learn from others outside my classroom and grow more confident in the social world."

Student Riza Mae A. Tajodo “Queen”, a student voice leader with a Diploma of Leadership & Management (BSB50420), is dedicated to improving TAFE Queensland.

“As a highly motivated and experienced leader within Student Voice, I’m deeply committed to amplifying the diverse perspectives of both vocational and higher education students.”

Queen believes in "the power of community, collaboration, and shared purpose.”

“My values of empowerment, inclusivity and diversity, accountability, respect, and empathy align with Student Voice, and I’m excited to participate in projects that drive meaningful change," she said.

What being part of Student Voice means:

  • Contributing to positive change on campus
  • Enhancing the student experience for yourself and others
  • Developing employability, leadership and communication skills
  • Building lasting connections with students, staff and industry

TAFE Queensland is also a proud member of Student Voice Australasia, an international network working to embed meaningful student engagement in institutional decision-making.
