TAFE Queensland’s Academy of Sport and the Brisbane Bullets now offer a mid-year intake for TAFE at School students starting July 2026

The program gives Year 10, 11 and 12 students the opportunity to complete a nationally recognised coaching qualification while still at school, studying one day per week at TAFE Queensland’s South Bank campus as part of their senior education.

Delivered in partnership with the Brisbane Bullets, the course extends beyond the traditional classroom, offering students unique insight into an elite sporting environment and the opportunity to engage directly with industry professionals at the club.

A key highlight of the program has been the involvement of Bullets staff as guest speakers, with students hearing firsthand from professionals across coaching, high performance, operations and administration. These sessions help students better understand the breadth of careers in sport, while connecting their studies to real-world industry practice.

Students are welcomed into the Bullets environment from day one, receiving official Academy of Sport – Bullets program training shirts that help build a strong sense of connection and identity. Senior Bullets staff were also on hand during orientation to welcome the latest cohort of students who commenced earlier this year.

Game day experiences have further enhanced the student journey, with participants exposed to the energy and professionalism of the NBL environment. From observing match day operations to gaining behind-the-scenes insights, students are developing a deeper understanding of how elite sporting organisations operate.

TAFE Queensland Manager, Academy of Sport Partnerships, Don Harley, said the program is designed to give school students a genuine head start in the sport industry.

“TAFE at School is about opening doors to elite sporting organisations early,” Mr Harley said.

“Students are not only gaining a qualification and contributing to their QCE, but they are also building knowledge, connections and experiences that other students simply don’t get. This sets the foundation to continue into a post-school dual diploma program, bringing them even closer to a career in sports coaching or administration.”

The introduction of a mid-year intake provides greater flexibility for students and schools, creating an additional entry point into one of TAFE Queensland’s most in-demand Academy of Sport programs. Study for the six-month program will commence in July, with students able to complete their Certificate II in Sport Coaching (SIS20321) by the end of the year.

There are also strong pathway opportunities for students to continue their studies with the Brisbane Bullets, either through the Certificate III in Sport Coaching (SIS30521) for a further six months, or by progressing into the post-school dual diploma program. This full-time program is delivered from the Bullets’ High Performance Centre, with students attending two days per week while working towards a Diploma of Sport and Diploma of Leadership and Management (SIS50321/BSB50420).

The course is delivered across two locations in 2026, with opportunities available at both South Bank and Zillmere. Future expansion will also see delivery extended to the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, ensuring more students have the opportunity to pursue a career in the sport they love.

With strong engagement and growing demand, the Brisbane Bullets partnership continues to demonstrate the value of combining education with real-world sporting experiences.
