Establish the skills and experience you need to excel as a retail sale consultant in the beauty and cosmetic industry with this entry-level qualification. This course will give students a feel for what it will be like to work in cosmetics sales, providing hands-on lessons and tasks.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the number of people working as retail sales assistants is expected to see stable future growth. This very large occupational area is expected to create around 445,000 job openings over the next five years.

Offering practical training that will provide you with a hands-on experience, our experienced educators will teach you how to design and apply makeup, offer advice on beauty products and services, and sell to the retail customer. You will also learn to communicate as part of a salon team and conduct salon financial transactions.

Studying on campus is a great way to enjoy the benefits of face-to-face education in a way that is far removed from a typical school. No matter which campus you choose, you know that you will be learning in an adult environment where you will be respected and nurtured. Attend a campus to learn face-to-face with a teacher in one of our learning spaces; such as a classroom, workshop, laboratory or simulated environments, or interact with teachers using real-time video or web conference tools. Courses delivered on campus may have a combination of online and classroom based learning. Students are expected to undertake additional personal study to complete the course requirements.

Choosing to study a TAFE at School course is a great way to get a vocational qualification while you’re still in high school. You also gain valuable credits towards your QCE, an apprenticeship, a diploma or university.

You must be a Year 11 or 12 student enrolled at a participating high school, in some instances Year 10 students may be considered. In addition, the duration of your TAFE at School course cannot be longer than your remaining high school studies. Speak to your high school guidance counsellor or careers advisor for more information.

You must already be employed to enrol as an apprentice or trainee with TAFE Queensland. Speak to your employer about choosing TAFE Queensland as your Supervising Registered Training Organisation (SRTO).

Costs:

Eligible apprentices and trainees that meet the Queensland state funding requirements will be charged a set fee per nominal hour. These fees are calculated at a regulated rate of $1.60 per nominal hour. Concession rates apply for students who hold a current Health Care Card or who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Non-funded apprentices and trainees will be charged a fee for service cost. These will be confirmed prior to the commencement of training.
Information regarding costs will be outlined on the agreed training plan, which will be provided to the employer and apprentice or trainee at time of induction.

Skills check

You will be invited to complete a Skills Check following your application submission, before enrolling to your studies. This helps you to decide if your course is right for you and allows us to understand your current abilities in English, Maths, as well as using Digital technology.

The recommended benchmark levels for this course are 2 in English, 2 in Maths and 2 in Digital Technology.

Selection criteria

It is highly recommended that students have basic literacy, numeracy and computer skills or equivalent to Year 10, turned 16 or have relevant experience and/or qualifications that indicate likely success in completing the course.

Traineeship pathway
To study a traineeship program you must be indentured as a trainee with your employer.

Employers need to be able to provide necessary human and physical resources to qualify for a trainee.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You are responsible for meeting the minimum standard of dress. This includes having access to and wearing a black shirt, black pants (no leggings or jeans), and enclosed shoes.

Traineeship
You will need to allocate approximately up to $250 to purchase kits. Kit prices do vary slightly dependant on which Pathway is chosen. Your TAFE Educator will provide the relevant purchase information once you have commenced your training.
You will also be required to purchase a TAFE Queensland branded uniform, items may incur additional costs of approximately $55. Further uniform details will be provided prior to course commencement.

TAFE at School
You will need to allocate approximately $100 to purchase a Makeup Kit. The relevant purchase information will be provided once you have commenced your training.
You may also be required to purchase TAFE Queensland branded uniform items. More details will be provided at enrolment or during orientation.

On campus - Lash extension focus
You will need to allocate approximately $400 to purchase a Makeup Kit. Your The relevant purchase information will be provided once you have commenced your training.

Robina campus
The Robina campus will be a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) campus for general learning. TAFE Queensland will have some portable devices available for short term loan and there will also be a limited number of desktop computers located on-site that students will be able to access. Important information

You should be comfortable with both providing and receiving treatments from other students during the course.

Skill and knowledge assessments are an essential step in progressing through your course. You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
