Strengthen your potential for a career in the sports industry with this diploma qualification, delivered in partnership with peak sporting organisations.

According to the Australian Government's labour markets insights Service there is strong future growth predicted for this industry with increasing demand for qualified sports coaches, instructors and officials with over 44,000 positions expected by 2026.

In this qualification you'll cover coaching fundamentals including how to plan and deliver coaching programs for high-performing athletes, apply sport psychology principles, and understand the various elements of running a success event. Additionally, you'll develop essential sports industry skills including managing risk, leading and managing people, and maintaining workplace health and safety.

Our highly-experienced team of industry leaders will give you the guidance you need to succeed in your studies and beyond. This course also offers unique work-integrated learning opportunities at various industry partners across different departments and elite sporting facilities.

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Domestic students
There are no selection criteria requirements for domestic students. 

International students
The following selection criteria requirements apply only to International students:

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent - For a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International.
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place. 

Completion of Year 12 or equivalent, or non school-leavers are selected according to eligibility and merit, vocational experience, previous study and personal competencies, or currently employed in the industry. If you’re under 17 years of age, special enrolment conditions may apply.

Resources required

You are responsible for meeting the minimum standard of dress. This includes having access to and wearing appropriate general fitness attire and enclosed shoes. You may be required to purchase TAFE Queensland branded uniform items. The purchase of these uniform items may incur additional costs. More details will be provided after enrolment or during orientation.

You will be provided with a recommended reading list and/or required textbooks during orientation or at the start of each unit. The purchase of these resources may incur additional costs or you may be able to borrow them from the TAFE Queensland library network.

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Robina campus
The Robina campus will be a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) campus for general learning.  Students are able to access discounted pricing for device purchases via JB Hi-Fi.  TAFE Queensland will have some portable devices available for short term loan and there will also be a limited number of desktop computers located on-site that students will be able to access.  For all the details visit the BYOD page on our website. 

Placement

If you are not currently employed or volunteering in industry, during your course you will be required to complete work experience so you can start practising your new skills in a real-world environment. You’ll be required to work shifts determined by your provider, and these can include early mornings or late nights, any day of the week, including public holidays. TAFE Queensland may be able to assist in arranging suitable work experience.

Completing work experience is compulsory, and you will be expected to manage family and work commitments in order to complete your shifts. You are required to complete up to 100 hours of work experience to satisfy this component of your qualification.

You can apply to study this course through the Queensland Tertiary Admission Centre (QTAC). You will need to submit your application on the QTAC website.
