Course overview

Make a start in your career in aged care with this entry-level qualification. This course will give you the skills you need to provide individualised support and care to people in home, community, or health care settings.

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the aged care sector is currently experiencing very strong growth. This very large occupation is expected to create around 179,000 job openings over the next five years. 

You will learn how to support independence and wellbeing, gain a range of technical skills, and develop a range of transferable skills from communication to teamwork. This specialised course will give you the skills to facilitate the empowerment of older people, and provide support to those living with dementia. Our highly-experienced teachers provide one-on-one guidance and support every step of the way, to ensure you have the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in the field.

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work in aged care and/or home and community care. It will also give you the foundation to undertake further studies in the community services and health sectors.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

Domestic students
The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to domestic students, it is highly recommended that you:

  • are aged 16 years or older by the course commencement date; 
  • have successfully completed Year 10 (or equivalent) or are of mature age; and
  • have basic English skills (written and verbal communication).

International Students
The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to International Students:

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 5.5 (no individual band less than 5.0) or ISLPR 2+ on all skills or other - For a list of all English Language test accepted by TAFE Queensland International
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 10 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.

Resources required

You will require access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online systems, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office, Adobe Acrobat Reader and Adobe Flash Player. This equipment and software is available for students to use at a number of TAFE Queensland locations. It is highly recommended that students have access to a laptop or mobile device that supports internet connection with USB capabilities. 

You may also be required to purchase Industry Standard uniform items including TAFE Queensland branded items and closed-in, non-slip soled shoes. These details will be provided after enrolment or during orientation. The purchase of these uniform items may incur additional costs. 

You will also require a valid email address and access to personal stationery items.

Placement

Students are advised that they will need to evidence full COVID-19 vaccination (2 doses) to attend the mandatory vocational placement assessment components of this course.The vaccines received must be approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for use in Australia or endorsed by the WHO-COVAX if vaccinated overseas. 

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
This course now requires you to obtain a NDIS Worker Screening Check to be eligible to attend the vocational placement assessment component of your studies.

You are to apply for this NDIS Worker Screening Check once enrolled as TAFE Queensland will need to verify your application as a student.

If you are not currently employed or volunteering in industry, during your course you will be required to complete vocational placement so you can start practising your new skills in a real-world environment. You’ll be required to work shifts determined by your placement provider, and these can include early mornings or late nights, any day of the week, including public holidays. TAFE Queensland is able to assist in arranging suitable placements.

Completing placement is compulsory, and you will be expected to manage family and work commitments in order to complete your shifts. You are required to complete 120 hours of placement to satisfy this component of your qualification.

Need to know

For all students who are undertaking courses that include Vocational Placements in a high risk workplace, Queensland Health has directed that students must declare your COVID-19 Vaccination status and evidence to either TAFE Queensland or the placement provider. 

This may require you providing us or the placement provider information on:

  • Your vaccinate status
  • Last date of vaccination
  • Evidence of vaccine status

Where this information will be collected as part of your application and / or enrolment process.  Any data collected will be managed under the TAFE Queensland Privacy Policy.

This requirement is in place for all students in affected courses, including TAFE at School students.

Those students who have a medical contraindication may be unable to complete the vocational placement component of their course. This means you may not be able to meet all of the requirements of your course and may not be able to graduate or receive your qualification.

In order to upskill from the Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) to Certificate III Individual Support (Home and Community), you are required to complete the following additional unit: CHCHCS001 Provide home and community support services. 

Aged Care 

Information about COVID-19 vaccinations, other immunisations and Vocational Placement need to be followed very closely. The below is a summary for you to note and action as soon as you are informed of enrolment:

  • Annual Influenza Vaccination – needs to be undertaken by 1 May each year for attendance at Aged Care facilities/settings
  • Full COVID-19 Vaccination – evidence of 2 vaccinations of a type approved by Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australia, or endorsed by the World Health Organisation. Students are advised that a booster may be deemed an additional requirement by health providers.
  • All students must apply for the NDIS National Worker Screening Clearance & complete the NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission Worker Orientation Modules.
  • Some Aged Care organisations may require Hepatitis B immunisation
  • Vaccination and screening/testing evidence requirements may alter during your studies, in accordance with changes to industry requirements and/or Australian Immunisation Guidelines.

 

Disability

  • Annual Influenza Vaccination – currently highly recommended and may be an individual workplace requirements for a Disability settings, this should be checked before placement. 
  • Full COVID-19 Vaccination – evidence of 2 vaccinations of a type approved by Therapeutic Goods Administration, Australia, or endorsed by the World Health Organisation. Students are advised that a booster may be deemed an additional requirement by health providers. 
  • All students must apply for the combined  NDIS national worker screening check and Blue Card
  • It is essential to complete the NDIS Quality Safeguards Commission Worker Orientation Modules 
  • Vaccination and screening/testing evidence requirements may alter during your studies, in accordance with changes to industry requirements and/or Australian Immunisation Guidelines.

Transition statement

Replacement qualification
This qualification has been replaced by CHC33021 Certificate III in Individual Support, as of 22 November 2022. A transition period applies to enable current students to complete their study. The transition period finishes on 21 November 2023.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
