Course overview

Our English Language Programs have been developed to offer you comprehensive courses to improve your English language skills. All levels equate with the Common European Framework (CEF) to ensure your results are internationally viable, and also provide direct access pathways into TAFE Queensland courses.

General English – Develop the English language and communicative skills needed for social and work situations and daily life activities. Learn basic comprehension, reading and writing skills through to more complex elements such as syntax and grammar. General English is not a direct entry pathway to TAFE Queensland Certificate or Diploma courses. Adding and successfully completing an Exam Preparation or Academic English course will allow direct entry.

Meet our English teachers and find out why our English students recommend studying English at TAFE Queensland.

Learning support options

We have around-the-clock, one-on-one support services if you need an extra hand. The Learning Skills Centre — located in most of our campus libraries — is a drop-in service staffed by experienced teachers who can help with study skills. Studiosity is our online after-hours tutoring service focusing on writing, research, referencing, and subject-specific questions.

Experienced vocational experts

At TAFE Queensland we have been delivering exceptional vocational and education to Queensland's communities for more than 140 years — and we're not the only one's who think so. In 2016 we were awarded the Large Training Provider of the Year at the Queensland Training Awards.

Entry requirements

You will be required to undergo an initial pre-training assessment on the first day of class to determine which course level you are best suited to.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.

Resources required

It is recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader.

This equipment and software is available for students to use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

Important information

A one-off application fee of $150 also applies.

Material fees:

$150     1-12 weeks
$300     13-24 weeks
$450     25-36 weeks
$600     37-48 weeks
$750     49-60 weeks

The materials fee is charged in advance at the rate of one fee per 12 weeks of classes. This is the standard rate of progression through a level for the majority of students. If a student progresses at a faster rate or moves into IELTS Preparation, English for Academic Purposes or Cambridge Preparation, they may be required to pay an additional materials fee for the additional set of materials required for the new class. Students are always advised of this prior to moving classes.
