Entry requirements

Participants in this program must:

  • be registered with notation as an Enrolled Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), in partnership with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA)
  • be a permanent resident
Selection criteria

The following requirements apply:

  • Provision of certified copy of AHPRA Enrolled Nurse registration
  • Provision of employer's written support to complete the workplace observation within the facility through an authorisation form signed by your Director of Nursing

** If you are not currently working in industry, you will need to discuss your situation on an individual basis with the Regional Subject Matter Expert to determine whether you are able to effectively complete the requirements of this unit of study. The outcome of this may result in extra costs associated with Clinical Placement.

Resources required

It is highly recommended that students have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer/laptop with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations. Students will also require a valid email address and access to personal stationery items.

TAFE Queensland has replaced physical textbooks with online Nursing e-resources and applications. A recommended reading list will be provided to students after start of study.

Placement

This course requires workplace observation. Prior to undertaking workplace observation, students are required to progress through theoretical and practical simulation training components. The mandatory practical simulation components are conducted on campus.

Workplace observation will be conducted at your employing facility under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. Therefore, TAFE Queensland requires written support signed by your Director of Nursing prior to enrolment **.

** If you are not currently working in industry, prior to enrolment you will need to discuss your situation on an individual basis with a Regional Subject Matter Expert to determine whether you are able to effectively complete the requirements of this unit of study under a clinical placement arrangement. The outcome of this discussion may result in extra costs associated with Clinical Placement.

Important information

An Enrolled Nurse who does not have a notation and has not completed intravenous medicines administration education will need to complete all components of the unit within this skill set. Intravenous medications cannot be separated out.

An Enrolled Nurse who has a notation on their AHPRA registration will need to successfully complete this unit before they can apply to AHPRA have the notation removed. They will then be able to administer medications as per their employers' policy and procedures.

Please refer to the NMBA website Fact Sheet: Enrolled nurses and medicines administration
