Overview
TAFE Queensland is proud to be the market leader for Vocational Education and Training (VET) in Queensland, working with Government and industry to develop the critical training needed to support Queensland's future workforces and economy.
Funded by the Queensland Government’s VET Emerging Industries initiative that sees $15 million invested in new skills and training strategies across identified emerging industry needs in the manufacturing, energy, agribusiness, and screen and digital sectors, the development and delivery of this pilot program is a clear demonstration of how TAFE Queensland is connecting Queenslanders with the work they want and supporting employers to grow stronger workforces.
TAFE Queensland continues to support the growth of stronger workforces by developing and delivering products and training in emerging industries.
TAFE Queensland has been working with businesses across the state to develop and deliver training funded by the initiative.
These include:
Opportunity
Queensland needs skilled workers in new and emerging industry sectors, and in established industries where new occupations and job roles are evolving.
The VET Emerging Industries initiative has seen $15 million in funding from the Queensland Government to support emerging industries and established industries where new occupations and job roles are evolving.
Until June 2024, the two-year investment has boosted skills development across:
- Manufacturing ($5 million)
- Agribusiness ($5 million
- Energy ($4 million)
- Screen and Digital Technology ($1 million).
Solution
VEI delivered on three key streams of activity:
VET products – the development of VET products such as new qualifications, micro-credentials, skill sets, units of competency, and non-accredited training courses is crucial in providing training and teaching solutions to support the skills needs of emerging industries.
Skills gap training – analysing and then addressing the gaps between workers' existing skills and those required for industry is an efficient and agile way to upskill and reskill the workforce to meet industry needs.
Workforce development – fostering and implementing awareness raising strategies about new or changing industries assists businesses to prepare their workforce and be ready to engage in emerging industries.
Results
TAFE Queensland proudly developed and continues to deliver training across the following strategies:
The TAFEQ Manufacturing Strategy (Hydrogen Manufacturing Skills) developed resources for accredited and non-accredited hydrogen safety and operations skill sets. Developed in conjunction with CQUniversity, the project included teacher training and three pilot courses:
- Basic Hydrogen Safety Skill set
- Monitor Hydrogen using Control Systems Skill set
- Micro credential in Clean Energy (Clean energy)
- Hydrogen fuel cell driver operations
- Operate safely around hydrogen
- Safely manage hydrogen storage and refuelling.
Under the TAFEQ Manufacturing Strategy (Industry 4.0 Cobots), this project built a combination of accredited and non-accredited training resources for people working collaboratively with robots (cobots). A pilot course tested new training resources.
The TAFEQ Agriculture, Rural and Regional Strategy (Drones in Agriculture) developed an online micro-credential to introduce the operation, servicing, and repairing of drones in agricultural settings. Up to 100 participants trialled the new two-hour self-paced course.
The TAFEQ Renewable Energy Strategy Clean energy (Hydrogen Fundamentals) has created a micro-credential that covers the basics of hydrogen safety. Suitable for all workers who encounter hydrogen—from service station attendants to production workers—the short course outlined safety procedures and demystified common misconceptions about this energy source.
The TAFEQ Screen and Digital Strategy (Film and Gaming) introduced a film and gaming short course that provides upskilling opportunities for industry practitioners.
Developed in conjunction with industry stakeholders, participants trialled the new course that delivers skills in virtual production, post-production, animation, and visual effects.
Future plans
Upon the completion of pilot initiatives, the programs that were developed under the Queensland Government’s VET Emerging Industries initiative will continue to support necessary training to connect and grow Queensland’s workforce.
