Entry requirements
To enter this qualification, students must have the conceptual, technical and organisational skills to use a range of professional digital and/or film cameras and accessories to produce a folio of photo imaging work that demonstrates the ability to respond effectively to different photo imaging challenges and requirements.
Skills and knowledge may have been acquired through experience, or through formal study.
Selection criteria
Domestic and International Students
The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to Domestic and International Students:
Entry into this course is via an application process that may include an interview and submission of a portfolio of photographic work with an outline of the following:
- reflection on the idea and concept behind the image represented
- photographic equipment used to create the image
- computer and programs utilised within the process
- concepts and techniques used to create the final image.
International Students
The following Selection criteria requirements apply only to International Students:
- English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 5.5 (no individual band less than 5.0) or ISLPR 2+ on all skills or other - For a list of all English Language test accepted by TAFE Queensland International
- Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.
- A Portfolio is to be submitted upon application. In approx 250 words explain why you want to be a photographer and what are your expectations of the course. Your folio should demonstrate your skill in communicating and composing images with a camera.It is acceptable for the images to be processed and printed commercially. Please indicate if the work has been processed and printed by you.Include 10-15 black and white or colour images.
There are 5 set and 10 optional topics. Set topics:
1. A character portrait of a family member or friend.
2. A landscape or architectural image.
3. An advertising image that would be used to sell a product.
4. An abstract design / composition.
5. A self-portrait / self -image.
Please identify each set topic. Plus 5 - 10 photographic images of your choice.
Submit your portfolio in an A4 folder with plastic sleeves if possible otherwise electronic copies are acceptable.
Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place. TAFE Queensland has entered an agreement with Union Institute of Language (UIL) to facilitate the provision of the welfare services (fees apply).
Resources Required
It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software is available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.
You will also be required to have access to and bring to class a portable external hard drive, 35mm DSLR camera with two interchangeable lenses (that can be operated manually for shutter speed, aperture and focus), and potentially a colour checker passport for use with the camera. For the purpose of the qualification the Nikon D800/D600 or Canon 5D meet the minimum standards required.
It is also recommended that you have access to a computer capable of running Adobe Creative Suite software, which can be purchased after enrolment to access a student discount price.
Throughout the duration of the program, you may also be required to incur printing costs up to the value of $500.
