Course overview

Kick start your mechanical career with this trade-level qualification that will get you working in the automotive industry sooner. According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, demand for qualified mechanics grew strongly over the past five years with around 23,000 job openings expected over the next five years.

As well as developing the skills to manage a small automotive business, in this course you will discover how to service and repair the mechanical parts of motor vehicles including the engine, transmission (clutch, gear box and differential), and suspension systems (steering, brakes, wheels and tyres).

Successful completion of this course will qualify you to work as an automotive mechanic or light vehicle technician, or in management roles in an automotive retail, service and repair environments.

To achieve this qualification you will need to complete 36 units:
Core Competencies: 20
Elective Competencies: 16
You will also be required to undertake 400 hours of vocational placement in an approved setting. 

 

AUR40116 Certificate IV in Automotive Management
To achieve this qualification you will need to complete 10 units:
Core Competencies: 6
Elective Competencies: 4
You will also be required to undertake 120 hours of vocational placement in an approved setting. 

 

Please note that some units listed below are recognised in both qualifications either as core or elective, you will only need to complete these units once to satisfy the requirements of this dual award.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements for this course.

Selection criteria

International students
The following selection criteria requirements apply only to International students:

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent - For a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International.
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 10 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.

Placement

International Students
You will be required to undertake 520 hours of vocational placement in an approved setting. TAFE Queensland will assist with arranging suitable placements if you are not already working in the industry and will provide you with all the information you need at the beginning of your studies to complete this component of your course. 

Please note: completing vocational placement is compulsory, and you will be expected to manage family and work commitments in order to complete your shifts. You are responsible for ensuring you have met all the requirements to participate in vocational placement, and are required to make your own transport arrangements to and from your vocational placement approved setting.

The advertised cost and duration will be broken down as per the following:

  • Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Technology: duration - 18 months, cost - $23,400
  • Certificate IV in Automotive Management: duration - 6 months, cost - $6,800

This is a two-year dual qualification. There is no exit point after Certificate III.
