The Skills for Education and Employment (SEE) program provides up to 650 hours of free language, literacy and numeracy training to eligible job seekers. The aim of the program is to equip job seekers with the knowledge and skills required to succeed in further studies or the workforce.

Benefits of Skills for Education and Employment (SEE)

The SEE program allows you to learn at your own pace alongside like-minded students in a relaxed classroom setting. You'll benefit from our experienced teaching staff who specialise in adult learning.

In this specialised course you will gain practical skills in classes that are tailored to your abilities, goals and interests. You will also develop valuable digital literacy skills as you use computers, iPads and other technology to assist you throughout your studies.

The training can also help you gain:

  • job-search skills to find and apply for jobs
  • study skills for further education and training
  • computer and technology skills
  • industry-focused training specific to your region's employment needs
  • the confidence required to succeed in the job market.

How it works

Class structure

There are a variety of flexible study options for you to complete your SEE program. You can either study full time (between 20 and 25 hours per week) or part time (between 10 and 19 hours per week) while you continue your job search. Class times may vary depending on where you study, but classes are generally held during the day for up to five hours (including breaks) and run for 46 weeks of the year. Evening classes may be available at your chosen study location based on demand.

Work experience

SEE students may also qualify to complete work observation or work experience as part of their studies. Work observation activities may include guest speakers from businesses, workplace visits, interviews with staff, and simulated workplace environments. Work observation and experience can help you understand employer expectations and procedures, experience Australian workplace culture, develop your confidence, and map your own pathway to employment.

The SEE program may be your first taste of higher education, but it doesn't need to be your last. As you'll already be familiar with your local TAFE Queensland campus and our learning environment, you'll be in a great position to continue on with further studies. Why not use this opportunity to get qualified in a trade, complete a traineeship, or get the qualifications you need to launch your career in hospitality, beauty, horticulture, health, animal care, or any one of our 20+ study areas.

How to apply

The SEE program is an Australian Government initiative delivered by approved training organisations including TAFE Queensland. Job seekers are referred to the program by the Department of Human Services and local employment services providers.

Once you've been referred to the SEE program you will meet for pre-training assessment where the assessor will:

  • evaluate your literacy, numeracy, and study skills
  • discuss your goals for work or further study
  • explain your timetable and class attendance requirements
  • discuss your suitability for SEE.

The assessor will develop an Individual Pathway Guidance plan and place you in a training program that suits your needs and skill levels.
