According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, strong future growth is predicted for IT roles such as software developers, systems administrators, and computer network professionals—with around 17,000 job openings expected over the next five years.

Designed for those furthering their studies and are new to the IT industry, this stream provides a broad foundation across key areas including programming, web development, cloud infrastructure, networking, and cyber security. You’ll learn to create dynamic web pages, build user interfaces, install and manage enterprise-scale IT environments, and oversee network security.

This stream also covers strategic IT planning, workplace cyber security awareness, and managing client issues in real-world scenarios. Upon completion, you’ll be equipped for roles such as assistant software/web developer, IT administrator, systems administrator, or IT office manager, and have the foundational skills to pursue further study in the IT or cyber security fields.

Accelerated
Tailored for individuals with existing industry experience, this fast-track stream allows you to certify your current in-demand skills in Networking and System Administration or Cloud Engineering, and take the next step in your IT career or education.

You’ll certify your advanced capabilities in installing, configuring, and administering servers, managing networks, overseeing IT projects, and supporting secure operational environments. You’ll also have the option to specialise in either physical network components or cloud-based infrastructure, depending on your career direction.

This stream recognises your current skills and experience, helping you gain formal qualification faster and progress into higher-level roles or progress into further study.

VET Student Loan - $18,838 cap

The VET Student Loans program assists eligible students enrolled in approved courses to pay their tuition fees.  The Australian Government charges full fee-paying (non-subsidised) students a 20 per cent loan fee in addition to their tuition fees.  A VET Student Loan is a debt that must be repaid.

Entry requirements

Skills check

You will be invited to complete a Skills Check following your application submission, before enrolling to your studies. This helps you to decide if your course is right for you and allows us to understand your current abilities in English, Maths, as well as using Digital technology. 

The recommended benchmark levels for this course are 4 in English, 4 in Maths and 4 in Digital Technology.

If you are applying for a VET Student Loan the required levels to meet academic eligibility, as outlined by Commonwealth guidelines, is Level 4 English and Maths.

Selection criteria

Domestic and International Students
To successfully complete this qualification, it is highly recommended applicants for this course should evidence one of the following:

  • A Certificate III level qualification from the ICT Information and Communication Technology Training Package
  • Industry Certifications in the field of the Diploma you are applying for
  • Prior Information Technology experience or technical background relevant to the Diploma

If you are under 17 years of age, special enrolment conditions apply.

Accelerated Program
Entry into the Accelerated Program is via an application process and requires applicants to have at least 2 years' working experience in IT Industry. Experience needs to demonstrate practical knowledge and skills in the field of System Administration, Network Administration and Network Engineering.

International Students
The following selection criteria requirements apply only to International students:

  • English Language Proficiency: Academic IELTS 6.0 (no individual band less than 5.5) or equivalent - For a list of all English Language tests accepted by TAFE Queensland International.
  • Academic Requirements: Completion of Year 12 (or equivalent). Non school-leavers must have relevant work experience or qualification that indicates likely success of course completion. For more information on the international education achievement levels equivalent to Year 10 and 12.

Applicants should be a minimum of 17 years of age and turning 18 during the first year of study with TAFE Queensland. International students who are under 18 years of age and are applying for a student visa are required by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs to have adequate welfare arrangements in place.

Resources required

It is recommended that you have access to a reliable internet connection to access TAFE Queensland's online learning system Connect, and a computer with up-to-date software, including Microsoft Office and Adobe Acrobat Reader. This equipment and software are both available for use at all TAFE Queensland locations.

You will also be required to have access to:

  • a 1TB SSD portable external drive
  • a computer with minimum 16GB of RAM, i7 processor or equivalent, with the capability of running Virtual Machines (when working at home)

Important information

You must be aware that this is not an introductory level of IT, but it is a diploma level of skill and knowledge required across a broad range of IT areas. Basic IT fundamentals would be assumed for all applicants to be successful.

You may be assessed in a number of ways while you are studying at TAFE Queensland, including observation, written assessment, questioning, portfolios, work samples, third-party feedback, and through recognition of prior learning.
