New partnership to deliver unique sports development program

Queensland Cricket has formed a new partnership with TAFE Queensland to deliver the Queensland Cricket Academy – a unique sports development program.

Specialised cricket training is at the forefront of the initiative, which provides participants with the opportunity to develop key skills for a career in the professional sports industry.

Queensland Cricket Chief Executive Officer Terry Svenson said partnering with TAFE Queensland on the Queensland Cricket Academy would help provide a strong future for the game by attracting people who are passionate about developing and growing cricket.

“Most people who work in sport and cricket do it because they are following their passions; however the pathway to having a career in this industry is not always that clear. The Queensland Cricket Academy will provide that pathway and give students the practical experience and skills required to have a career in cricket coaching, training or administration,” Mr Svenson said.

“A key part of Queensland Cricket’s strategic plan is to be an employer of choice. By giving students the tools required to have a career in cricket, we will ensure we are recruiting great people to work with us, which in turn will help us build a bright future for our game,” he said.

“Thank you to TAFE Queensland for their support and vision in providing this fantastic opportunity.”

TAFE Queensland General Manager (Brisbane) Dr Paul Wilson said this unique program has been designed for those seeking a career in cricket and existing workers in the industry looking to upskill.

“Students undertaking the Queensland Cricket Academy program will have the opportunity to work with different professionals across the many facets of the business, including the coaching staff," Dr Wilson said.

“As well as obtaining a Diploma of Sports Development (SIS50612), students will be exposed to the full range of professional roles that work behind-the-scenes with Queensland Cricket. Students may choose to pursue a career in one of these supporting roles or use this program as a springboard into further studies in a similar field.

“TAFE Queensland is the leading provider of industry-specific training and this partnership with Queensland Cricket will follow on from the success of our existing Sports Academy programs with Queensland Rugby League and Brisbane Roar Football Club.”
