Course overview

With mental health problems, stress and anxiety on the rise, there is a high chance that we all have someone at work and in our lives being held back because of negative emotional reactions, ineffective communication, and poor decision making.

This short course will help you to identify and better manage any negative thinking, stress and conflict that’s holding you back through examination of the ultimate causes of these afflictions so you can be the best you can be and get more out of life

Our natural default position is to avoid pain and seek pleasure as efficiently as possible which is rarely a good long term solution as it doesn’t address the root underlying causes of these types of problems which inevitably repeat and resurface later in new situations and environments.

Here are some common ways that we try to cope with problems like these:

  1. We avoid difficult issues and conversations with others or lash out.
  2. We complain about, avoid and put off new and difficult tasks.
  3. We waste time over thinking about these problems.
  4. We gossip to recruit allies to make us feel better.
  5. We build up resentment and anger which can affect our family and loved ones at home.
  6. We avoid and leave conflict only to find the same conflict resurfacing.

This first group of our Emotional Intelligence short courses (Introduction, Blind Spots, Identity, Values) introduces you to what are now widely recognised as the two key skills for the future (essential for growth, resilience and performance) - emotional intelligence and coaching.

In this introductory course, you will develop a better understanding of:

  • The biology behind all negative thinking, stress and conflict.
  • The two causes of all psychological suffering - identification and over active imagination.
  • The different ways that unhelpful identification and blind spots hold us back at work and in life.
  • A range of defensive reactions, behaviours and habits that we sometimes adopt when we experience any sort of psychological discomfort that can unintentionally hurt us and others over time.
  • How conflicts can cycle in a downward spiral and the roles we all tend to play.
  • Our self awareness and action tools that help to overcome these problems and improve happiness, co-operation and performance.

Activities and key takeaways include:

  • Facilitator led personal examples.
  • Powerful videos to highlight key points.
  • Powerful and engaging self awareness activities e.g. who am I really? denial, rationalisation, repression and projection etc.
  • Fun and engaging practical activities.
  • A selection of tools to take away and start using in your daily life.

Once you complete this short course it is recommended you continue with our Applied Emotional Intelligence short course.
