Course overview

Kick start your career in the beauty industry with this dual qualification in make-up and retail cosmetics. You'll develop the practical skills required to become a cosmetic assistant or make-up artist. 

According to the Australian Government's Job Outlook service, the beauty therapy industry is currently experiencing strong growth with around 5,000 job openings expected over the next five years. Employers are looking for qualified candidates who are reliable, well presented, and interact well with others.  

During this course you will learn make-up application techniques from foundation skills through to advanced techniques such as photographic, airbrushing, remedial camouflage and creative makeup. Collaboration with hair stylists, photographers, beauty therapists and other make-up artists while training will further enhance your skills and employability opportunities.

Successful completion of the course will qualify you to work as a make-up artist as part of a team or on a freelance basis in settings such as make-up studios, retail cosmetic counters, fashion and media sets, and photography studios.

Entry requirements

You must be in year 10 or 11 and be attending high school.

Selection criteria

You must be in year 10 or 11 and be attending high school and must have basic literacy, numeracy and computer skills or equivalent to Year 10.

Resources required

Gold Coast Region
You will be required to purchase a make up kit which includes all the resources you will need to participate in this course. The make up kit will incur additional costs of up to $1300.
Payment for the kit is made directly to HUXLEY School of Makeup.

Greater Brisbane Region
You will be required to purchase a TAFE Queensland branded uniform, this may incur additional costs of up to $100.
You may also be required to purchase an equipment kit containing items required for performing beauty services, this may incur additional costs of up to $350.
More details will be provided at time of enrolment or during orientation.

You should be comfortable with both providing and receiving treatments from other students during the course.
