When you come to study and train at TAFE Queensland, your classes, training and assessments will be in English, so it’s important to understand the minimum English language requirements before you apply.
There is a minimum level of English language skills that are required to study at TAFE Queensland for international students who do not speak English as their first language which is as follows:

* Please note: some courses may require higher or lower IELTS (Academic) than the minimum of IELTS 5.5 and/or include specific sub-score requirements.
Please check the relevant course brochure for full details on the English language entry requirements for your chosen course.
The following table details the equivalent English language test scores to the required IELTS levels. Applicants are required to meet at least one of the English language entry requirements listed in the equivalencies table below.
If you are in Australia, you can complete the IELTS exam at our IELTS Testing Centre.
Don’t have formal recognised English test?
Students who have not completed an internationally recognised and standardised English Test can complete the Placement Test under agent’s supervision, and apply to undertake a course of ELICOS study as an alternative entry pathway.
The Placement Test cannot be used for direct entry to VET Programs at TAFE Queensland; test is used to gain an idea of the student’s current English level to suggest how many weeks of ELICOS a student requires to meet their study needs. To enter VET Program students will need to provide evidence of a formal test.
To find out how and where you can take the Placement Test, please contact International Course Advisers.
